Chapter Seven

Of course Nick spends the night with me, which works out well since his apartment is still undergoing renovations. After the movie, we stay up super-late, talking about a lot of things.

He wants to know how I think about certain things, adult things like current events and the political landscape. I don’t know as much as he does, but I surprise myself by knowing more than I thought.

The kind of questions he asks me make me really think about my answers. And that seems to please him, and lead to him asking even more interesting questions. He draws me out, gets me tell the truth about what I really think, even if it’s not politically correct.

He already knows what kind of movies I like, and that I love zombie video games but he wants to know more about what kind of books I read. We talked about literature last weekend at Brenda’s party but he wants to know specific things, like, how the words of certain authors make me feel, and how certain books I’ve read have changed the way I look at the world.

He listens to me so carefully and respectfully that it gives me a bit of confidence in my own opinion.

As we’re drifting off to sleep, his tummy rumbles loudly. We laugh, but I’m embarrassed because I have no real food in the house to offer him. He waves that off and mentions that he’s feeling out of shape from eating on the run a lot lately. Mind you, his idea of “out of shape” must be everyone else’s idea of near-perfect, but this gives me an idea. I offer to go shopping and get the ingredients to cook him a nice meal the next night.

He thinks it’s a great idea. But he wants to come with me, to pick up a few things. So we make a plan to go shopping the next day and finally we fall asleep with the sun just starting to come up.
